What you need to know about Greenland

And the truth behind what Trump is saying.....

The Indigenous people of Greenland today are primarily the Greenlandic Inuit, whose ancestors arrived from the Canadian Arctic as part of the Thule culture around the 13th century CE. Archaeology shows earlier Paleo‑Inuit cultures—such as Saqqaq and Independence I and II—lived in Greenland from about 2500 BCE, but these groups disappeared before the ancestors of today’s Inuit arrived. After centuries as skilled marine hunters adapted to Arctic conditions, Inuit communities later experienced Danish colonial rule beginning in the 18th century and now form the majority population in Greenland, which has home rule within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump keeps saying that he will take over Greenland because of it's strategic value, however the USA already has a base in Greenland. The United States operates Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in northwestern Greenland, which is a permanent U.S. military installation used for missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance in coordination with Denmark and NATO.

It seems that the strategic value is not the real reason, with Trump it never is.

So what is the Truth?

Greenland has large but mostly untapped reserves of minerals (including rare earth elements), hydrocarbons, hydropower, and rich living marine resources that could be exploited now or in future, although politics, economics, environment and infrastructure are big constraints.[1][2][3]

Key mineral resources

- Base metals & iron: Significant deposits of zinc, lead, iron ore and copper have been identified, including very large undeveloped zinc–lead resources at Citronen Fjord and iron ore at Isua and other sites.[1][3] These are technically minable with current technology but challenged by remoteness, ice, and costs.[2][3]

Critical & strategic minerals: Greenland hosts rare earth elements (REEs), including heavy REEs like dysprosium and terbium, as well as niobium, tantalum, graphite, titanium, vanadium and tungsten, and many of the EU‑listed “critical raw materials”.[4][5][6][3] Projects such as Kvanefjeld (Kuannersuit) contain one of the world’s largest rare‑earth oxide deposits plus substantial uranium, but REE mining there is currently constrained by politics and environmental concerns.[4][3]

Uranium and associated elements: Greenland contains large uranium resources, often as a by‑product of REE deposits.[4][5] However, the parliament has effectively banned uranium mining (e.g. halting Kuannersuit), so this resource is more a long‑term potential than something that can be exploited under current policy.[3]

Fossil fuels and energy

Oil and gas potential: Geological surveys suggest sizeable oil and gas resources offshore on both the west and east coasts, with billions of barrels of oil equivalent considered technically present.[7][2][8] Exploration drilling since the 1970s has been largely unsuccessful commercially, and current Greenlandic policy has halted new oil and gas exploration licenses because of climate, environmental, and economic concerns.[7][8][9]

Coal and other fossil resources: Coal and some other fossil resources (e.g. historical coal mining sites, potential gas hydrates) exist but are minor in global terms and face the same climate‑policy headwinds as oil.[5][6]

Hydropower: The island has very large hydropower potential due to steep topography and high runoff, far beyond present domestic demand.[7][8][9] Greenland’s government is actively seeking investment to develop this resource for local use and potentially for energy‑intensive industries such as data centers or green hydrogen production in the future.[8][9]

Living resources and “natural capital”

Fisheries: Rich marine ecosystems support commercially important fisheries (e.g. shrimp, halibut and other species), which already make up a large share of Greenland’s export economy.[7][8][9] These fisheries are considered a key sustainable resource, though they are vulnerable to climate‑driven ecosystem change and pollution from mining or oil development.[7][2]

Hunting and bioproducts: Traditional hunting of marine mammals and terrestrial wildlife, while tightly regulated, is also a local natural resource, providing food and some commercial products, and could be impacted by environmental contamination from extractive industries.[2][10]

Tourism & landscape value: The dramatic Arctic landscape, ice sheet, glaciers and wildlife constitute a form of “natural capital” underpinning tourism, which Greenland’s government explicitly wants to protect when weighing extraction projects.[7][2][9]

Future‑oriented potentials

Expanding mineral access with ice retreat: Ongoing ice‑sheet retreat will gradually expose more bedrock and mineralized areas, increasing geological access over decades, though logistics and environmental risks will remain difficult.[1][2]

  • Critical minerals for green tech: Greenland’s REE, graphite, nickel, titanium, vanadium and other deposits are strategically important for batteries, wind turbines, EVs and other low‑carbon technologies, making them attractive for future development as supply diversification away from existing producers is prioritised.[4][5][6][3]
  • Large‑scale renewable‑driven industry: With abundant hydropower and proximity to the North Atlantic, future scenarios include electricity‑intensive industries (e.g. green hydrogen, ammonia, metals processing or data centers) siting in Greenland to exploit low‑carbon power, provided infrastructure and investment hurdles are overcome.[7][8][9]

Thoughts

So, it would seem that the real reason for Trumps interest in Greenlan has nothing to do with defence and everything to do with natural resources. We all know that Trump dismisses climate change because he can't make as much money in the technology as quickly as he can by gaining oil resources for his supporters in business. The oil reserves in Greenland are attractive to him, just as they are in Venesuela, and we have seen that he is willing to break International Law to achieve his aims in that country.

Don't be fooled by what he says, always look for the money that can be made for him and his supporters (the biggest donators in his camp).

Warning

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen recently stated:

“If the US chooses to attack Greenland, which is protected by NATO, then any diplomatic alliance with the Americans will cease.”

Keir Starmer won't take action, he won't denouce Trumps actions even though International Law has been broken, he is a weak leader with no backbone. Scared of reprisals that would affect the UK economy. The "special relationship" seems to be one where Starmer is bent over while Trump takes him from behind.

The UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper made a statement about Venesuela and followed it with a statement regarding Greenland. In that statement she said:

"Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark."

"Our close European partners, our long-standing Nato allies and all our countries work closely together on security issues, and will always do so."

"The future of Greenland is a matter for the Greenlanders and Danes, and no-one else."

This sounds great, but she is simply stating facts, she hasn't phones Trumpand told him to shut the F*ck up has she?

None of this will not worry Trump who has shown many times that he values Putin (even though he often says he is angry with Putin). Putin considers the growth of NATO as a threat to his country. His country that can't beat Ukraine and it's largly volunteer army by the way. However, if NATO did not exist, then Putin (and Trump) could invade whatever countries they liked.

That may seem like a strange thing to say, but make no mistake, that is the thinking of this egotistical, autocratic lunatic running the USA.

The American people and the rest of the world needs to wake up and take action before it is too late.

And so we see that if he isn't stopped, Trump will continue his resource gathering, Venesuela has enough oil to keep the USA going for over 800 years, by which time the planet will have heated up so that the USA will be uninhabitable, but Trump doesn't care, he will be long dead. Adding Greenlands oil reserves is of little consequence in this line of thinking, but he can make money and so he will.

Yet another reason that I can't wait to escape the crazy world we live in and just be mobile, travelling from one lovely country to the next, avoiding lunatics and the consequences of their actions.
