The current situation in Ghaza as I write, is that Israels armed forces are still shelling, bombing and shooting innocent people. I more than many appreciate the challenges of telling innocent people from those with bad intent. I served in Northern Ireland during the troubles and it is impossible to tell the bad guys from the innocent until they open fire.
However, there have been so many people killed in Ghaza that Israels plan to wipe out Hammas is doomed to fail and here's why. First, you can't destroy an idea with explosives and bullets, that idea will evolve over time and become a new idea.
Therefore, the children who are growing up having lost one or more family members to actions by Israel are going to grow up hating Isralies and possibly hating all Jewish people. As a result the old idea of how Ghaza should be managed and governed according to Hammas will evolve into the next version of Hammas.
This seems obvious to me, so why isn't it obvious to Israel?
WW2
During the 2nd world war, the Nazi aligned forces did to Jewish people what Israel is doing to Ghaza. They went all out to destroy every last man woman and child. Thankfully the Allied forces won the war and with the help of Israli's, Jews and others, hunted down those in charge who oredred the horrendous attacks and actions of the Holocaust.
Now the free world is starting to distance itself from Israel and it's policies, but don't be fooled by the outward actions. The UK for example has finally stopped selling parts and ordinance to Israel if it thinks these items might be used on the people of Ghaza..... Mmmm, let that sink in.
Why do the UK and America value Israel so much?
The simple answer is "Intelligence". The world of spooks, both Intelligence and counter intelligence relies heavily on the information that the Israeli's provide to the West. Their knowledge of the Middle East in particular is second to none, and as much of the worlds Oil and Gas comes from that region, stability is important.
It is impossible to say how much that intelligence is worth, but in the Cyber Security world (my old play ground) a large number of the very best tools come from Israli companies, and you can bet that better versions are used by Mossad, Shin Bet and Aman.
What needs to be done then?
Of course, we would all like to see an immediate cease fire, the United Nations should be the organisation that distributes aide to the people of Ghaza, but that needs to be done in a multitude of ways. Here's one thing that is obvious and clear however; Israeli forces and Hammas should be nowhere near the aide depots. These should be protected by UN troops, to ensure that the violence we have seen is stopped.
The aide vehicles, including the lorries carrying aide need to be protected, from windshields to tailgates and they need to be escorted by light armoured vehicles. The attacks by desperate people need to stop, there is too much aide going missing or not reaching those who need it.
Isn't this common sense?
Look, I'm just a grumpy old guy, but even I can see that the statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that "Israel has the right to protect itself" does not include wiping out every person in Ghaza.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu needs to step down and a new leader who wants peace with their neighbours needs to be found.
In the section above about why the UK and the Americans value Israel so much, we have to remember that it is the fault of the in part of the British Government after WWI.
People are now dying of malnutrician, these are human beings. No matter your politics, religion or beliefs, if you are a reasonable person with good morals, then you are probably saddened if not sickened that the world has not found peace. That people have not found a way to settle their countries problems peacefully.
If you are religious and believe that the war is justified in some way, you should look more closely at your holy books. I'm definately in Stephen Fry's corner regarding religion. When asked what he would do if he was to find himself (as an agnostic (like me)) at the gates of heaven, meeting God, what would he say? His answer started with "Cancer in babies, really?" Here I would say innocent babies and children dying to bombs and bullets? Really?
If you are a politician, I would say, "shame on you for not doing more to stop this" because whatever you did, it was too little too late. You don't invade another country to get hostiges back, you negociate, if you can't negociate, you find a mediator who can get you to the negociation table.
If you believe that war is the only answer, then you are part of the problem. It was July 31st 2007 before the last British troops left Northern Ireland, but Protistents and Catholic communities are still very much segregated.
It will probably be another 2 - 5 generations before all the barriers start to disolve, this makes me personally very sad. You see, I found nearly every single person I ever came into contact with in Ireland to be really nice, decent people. If you talk to people, you occationally find a 'bad un' as they say, but most are good people.
If anything is going to change in Israel and Ghaza, never mind Iran and Syria, people need to negociate, they need to learn that weapons are never a good idea. More than anything else, the world should be ashamed of any conflict that is going on, because I guarantee that innocent people are being hurt the most.
Background Information (Produced by AI):

Israel came to be as a modern country through the Zionist movement, Jewish immigration to British-controlled Palestine, and the United Nations' 1947 partition plan which divided the land between Jewish and Arab states. On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion declared Israel’s independence, soon followed by war with neighboring Arab states, ultimately securing Israeli territory beyond the UN plan1245.
Key developments that led to Israel’s establishment include:
- Zionism and Jewish Immigration: From the late 19th century, especially after 1896, many European Jews, driven by antisemitism and inspired by nationalist ideas, began moving to their ancestral homeland of Palestine, then under Ottoman and later British control. This movement aimed to create a Jewish homeland14.
- British Mandate Period: After World War I, Britain controlled Palestine, but tensions rose as more Jews immigrated. Conflicts between Jewish settlers and the Arab residents increased, with Britain struggling to maintain order124.
- Holocaust and Post-WWII Context: The Holocaust highlighted the need for a Jewish safe haven, increasing international sympathy for the Zionist cause. After WWII, many Jewish refugees sought to move to Palestine, but British restrictions limited immigration, causing additional conflict124.
- UN Partition Plan (1947): The United Nations proposed dividing Palestine into two states—one Jewish, one Arab. The Jewish community accepted the plan, but Arab communities and neighboring states rejected it, leading to civil conflict123.
- Declaration of Independence and War (1948): On May 14, 1948, Israel declared independence. The next day, Arab countries including Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria invaded. Israel’s forces won the war, expanding their territory beyond the UN plan and resulting in large numbers of Palestinian refugees127.
In summary, Israel’s creation was a result of decades of Jewish migration inspired by political Zionism, international decisions after WWI and WWII, a UN partition, and a subsequent war that defined its initial borders and set the stage for ongoing regional conflict1245.
